Today in “things we really wish didn’t need to happen,” Democratic Representative Mike Quigley has introduced the Covfefe Act.
No, we’re not kidding.
The Illinois congressman shared a statement on his website on Monday morning explaining that the Presidential Records Act has been expanded to include any social media posts shared by the President of the United States, not just posts shared from the official @POTUS accounts.
According to Quigley, the “COVFEFE” Act stands for “Communications Over Various …read more

Dos Equis might be dropping Havas Worldwide for Droga5, but the agency isn’t going out quietly. In a full-page print ad in Ad Age’s June 12 issue, the agency says “Adios” to the brand in big bold lettering above a lengthy list of awards that the Most Interesting Man in the World campaign won since debuting in 2006.
The ad, which is also running in print in Adweek and The New York Times, reads
Adios, mis amigos. The Most Interesting Man in the World campaign has always been about bravery from its groundbreaking inception through years of innovation to the moment we chose to part ways. Thank you to our partner, Heineken, for allowing us to co-create one of the most iconic and awarded campaigns in history one that also drove sales spectacularly.

Weibo, China’s version of Twitter, blocked millions of its overseas users from posting pictures or video yesterday, on the anniversary of Tiananmen Square.
The ban over the weekend was simply announced as a “systems update,” but people noticed that local users were also not able to change their profile information, nor post photos or videos in comments.
The Tiananmen Square Massacre was a pro-democracy protest that took place in 1989, when the Chinese military, armed with rifles and tanks, killed at …read more

Think bragging about your digital chops will still give you an edge in years to come? Think again.
A new Global Digital Outlook Study released by digital-agency society SoDA and Forrester found that more than three-quarters of client-side marketers and agency leaders believe the term “digital” will disappear within five years as a meaningful differentiator.
The report included responses from 90 client-side marketing and tech leaders and 126 agency executives, primarily from mid-sized digital agencies. Some of them think the term is already dunzo: Just over half (54%) of client-side marketers said the term digital is still a meaningful way to differentiate agencies and marketing activities related to technology while 27% of agency leaders feel the term has lost relevance.

Hampton Creek’s packaging makeover may help the vegan products maker distance itself from controversial headlines and a pinch of government scrutiny.
In August, a Bloomberg story suggested the Just Mayo maker hired contractors who bought lots of the product off store shelves, dragging the company into the spotlight. A month later, Bloomberg Businessweek ran an in-depth expose. Those pieces were not the first to raise questions about Hampton Creek or its founder and CEO, Josh Tetrick. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and Justice Department even looked into possible securities violations and criminal fraud, inquiries Tetrick announced in March had been dropped. He’s moving on.
“It’s hard to go through stuff in general without learning something,” Tetrick said when asked about those issues. “Things just worked themselves out.”

They’re cute and fun, they answer “Why” questions with more patience than most parents, and they keep kids occupied for hours on end. But are tech toys a danger for kids?
As internet-connected products gain in popularity with both children and parents, toy marketers are grappling with the challenges of selling products that could be hacked, opening the door to privacy concerns and PR disasters.
“If you’re traditionally a toy company and now you’re adding this layer of connectedness, you’re wading into areas you know nothing about,” said Michele Martel, an attorney who runs consultancy Martel Media House. “You’re not a tech company, but you’ve become one because now you’re an Internet-of-Things company.”

When we last saw the Saturday Night Live couple it was early days for their relationship. There was some minor jealousy over Leslie’s close relationship with fellow cast member Colin Jost, but we were led to believe that the Jones/Mooney coupling would persevere.

The retail tailspin continued last week when big chains including Macy’s, Kohl’s and JC Penney reported first-quarter sales declines. On earnings calls, brands suggested better marketing would help reverse the slide. But analysts aren’t so sure and predict more store closures than the hundreds already announced.
“The problem with some of these stores is too much sameness the brands aren’t special enough,” said Oliver Chen, retail analyst at Cowen & Co. “These stores need to reinvent themselves.” He noted more personalized marketing, better products and radical changes to the store experience could help the situation.
Here’s what to expect later this year from America’s biggest retailers:

The number of female judges at the Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity has doubled in the last five years to 43.5% for next month’s festival, and for the first time, eight of the 23 jury presidents will be women.
This has been a hot-button issue for years. Until 2014, just one in five Cannes judges were women, and there were only one or two female jury presidents each year.
Since then, the festival has introduced programs like See It Be It, which invites 15 future female creative leaders to the festival each year, and added the Glass Lions category in 2015 at the suggestion of Facebook’s Sheryl Sandberg and LeanIn.org to recognize work that promotes more equal gender representation. This year, the festival has agreed to caution jurors not to recognize work that reflects gender bias.

Though color photography was invented decades before World War II, it was still a rather niche process, more complicated and expensive than black-and-white photography.
The scarcity of color film was compounded by the hazards of shipping in wartime and the difficulties of reproduction and printing.
Nevertheless, thousands of color images were created during the global conflict. 3,000 of those were assembled by the British Ministry of Information and eventually ended up in the collections of …read more
