It has designated Dec. 3 (D3, geddit?) as the official 3D Printing Day, and has also launched a new campaign that hopes to gives elves a rest for the holidays, by 3D printing gifts instead.
Here’s how it works: On Dec. 3, people can pick a prototype and tweet their wish, along with the hashtag #3DPrintMyGift. The prototypes themselves are designed by celebrities including weatherman Al Roker, host Stacy London, Red Sox pitcher Craig Breslow, as well as companies, like the Cooper-Hewitt Museum and Spotify. They’re all working with CAD designers, who will customize the prototype, then ship to your house, for free, just in time for the holidays.
Prototypes include penholders, iPhone 5 speakers, and even a cat charm (this is the Internet, after all.)

Mattel has appointed Lola, Lowe & Partners’ Madrid-based agency, to handle its European advertising and digital account, which includes Barbie, Hot Wheels, Monster High, and Max Steel, as well as new product launches.
The win comes after a pitch — conducted without a consultant and led by the procurement team at Mattel — that took four months from the initial Request for Information to agencies until the decision. It is not known which other agencies pitched for the business, but Ogilvy & Mather has handled Mattel business for more than half a century.
Miguel Simoes, CEO of Lola, said, “This is a huge opportunity and a chance for us to help [Mattel] get a powerful position in the negotiations between child and parent it’s a process that involves a lot of emotion. Mattel is really in the international entertainment business, so this is fertile creative territory.”

A U.S. automotive safety agency adjusted its guidelines on how manufacturers may reference safety ratings.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) announced Wednesday that companies may no longer tout safety ratings with decimal points or ratings above five stars. Consumer-goods giant Unilever has launched Project Sunlight, an initiative to motivate people to adopt more sustainable lifestyles, with this four-minute web film created by David Latin America and Ogilvy & Mather London and directed by Moxie Pictures’ documentary vet Errol Morris (“The Fog of War,” “Thin Blue Line,” “Standard Operating Procedure”).
Launched today, on Universal Children’s Day, the film interviews expectant parents from around the world about their worries for their unborn child’s future, and then shows them a film about how forthcoming generations might be better off than we are now — with emotional results.
The short film is just the starting point of the effort. The Project Sunlight website will be a hub for stories and tips about sustainable development, some of it centered around some of Unilever’s products (such as Flora margerine and Lifebuoy soap) as well as its corporate work toward sustainability projects. It provides school meals through the World Food Programme; supports Save the Children to provide clean water; and UNICEF to improve hygiene.

The companies, mostly based in the U.K., tout a combined staff of over 1,000. Under the new holding group, they’ll will work toward a single profit and loss statement. Clients include Samsung, Direct Energy, PBS and IHG.
Johnny Hornby, CEO of Chi & Partners and the guy who orchestrated the creation of the new group, will serve as global CEO. Andrew Bailey, North American chairman of BBDO’s Proximity, is leaving to serve as North America CEO.
