At an NFL owners meeting last week, Houston Texans owner Robert McNair reportedly said of the ongoing national anthem protests by NFL players, “We can’t have the inmates running the prison.” On Sunday, McNair’s team responded.
More than 30 members of the Houston Texans organization knelt or remained seated during the pre-game national anthem. There had been rumblings of a major protest in the run-up to Sunday’s game against the Seattle Seahawks, and — unsurprisingly — it involved taking a knee.
Find your buds? The U.S. marketer of Corona, the Mexican beer known for its “Find Your Beach” tagline, is dipping its toe into the marijuana business. Constellation Brands, which also markets wine and spirits brands, has taken a 9.9% stake in a Canadian marijuana company called Canopy Growth Corp., the Wall Street Journal reported Sunday.
A Constellation spokesman confirmed the deal, which is expected to be formally announced on Monday. According to the Journal, Constellation will work with Canopy to create and market cannabis-infused beverages. Constellation will not sell any such pot products in the U.S. unless marijuana is legalized nationally, but it is eyeing the Canadian market, the Journal reported.
Canada is expected to legalize recreational pot next year. In the U.S., recreational marijuana use is legal in eight states and Washington, D.C. A Gallup poll released last week showed 64% of Americans supporting pot legalization, the broadest support Gallup has found in nearly a half-century of polling. For the first time, a majority of Republicans, 51%, back legalization, according to Gallup. Republican Attorney General Jeff Sessions is considered to be hostile to legalization, but he “could find himself out of step with his own party if the current trends continue,” Gallup noted.

Given the lift “This Is Us” last season saw in the currency data, advertisers such as T.J. Maxx, Universal Pictures and Chevrolet that have been big backers of the show are likely to get even more bang for their marketing buck. Assuming that a week of time-shifted viewing will add another seven-tenths of a ratings point to the “This Is Us” live-same average, the show is currently averaging north of 5 million members of the target demo in the C7 currency. That brings the average cost of reaching 1,000 people in the 18-to-49 set to $78.46, down from the $95.62 CPM that would be the price of admission to reach the live-same-day viewers.
As “This Is Us” continues to be the talk of both Madison Avenue and the office water cooler, it is by no means the only drama to draw a crowd thus far in the young season. ABC appears to have solved one of its trickier time slot dilemmas with “The Good Doctor,” which is currently drawing a demo that is two-and-a-half times the size of that which tuned in for last season’s Monday 10 p.m. occupant “Conviction.” Through its first four episodes, “The Good Doctor” is averaging a 2.1 in the demo, or around 2.71 million adults 18 to 49. By comparison, the first four hours of “Conviction” eked out a meager 0.8 rating, good for around 1 million members of the sub-50 crowd.
With an average unit cost of $125,678 per 30-second spot, “The Good Doctor” is also a hell of a bargain, as that translates to a $46.42 CPM. (Naturally, the rates buyers are paying in the scatter market are considerably higher than the prices negotiated during the summer upfront bazaar.)

Rival TV titans including A&E, CBS and Turner are considering banding together for a project, dramatically code-named Thor, to prove to marketers their commercials worked no matter where they ran on air. One goal is to break a stalemate that’s delaying TV’s crucial move into precision marketing.
It’s been about four years since TV networks set their sights on revamping commercials to compete better against digital by letting brands target audiences with more specific criteria than the traditional age and gender. This spring, several networks made some bold statements and took some big swings in the name of advancing audience buying on TV. But a power stuggle is holding back progress: TV networks are eager to sell targeted audiences, which allow them to raise prices on inventory, while buyers don’t want to pay more or risk their place at the table.
“We are the agents of our clients, not the networks, and we have to make sure we are not giving clients’ info away to them,” says Catherine Sullivan, president of U.S. investment at Omnicom Media Group.
