Starbucks baristas will no longer write “Race Together” on customers’ cups as of Sunday. Initially a part of the coffee company’s push to get people to discuss diversity frankly, the cups are no longer part of the conversation. According to CEO Howard Schultz, they were always “just the catalyst” for the Race Together initiative.
However, Starbucks will still hold forums and open more locations in minority communities, Schultz said in a …read more

LOS ANGELES — Justin Bieber’s roast, for all its hysterical and wildly inappropriate racial, sexual, bodily and bestial jokes, came with much higher stakes than the 13 others that Comedy Central has hosted before it…combined.
Here was a chance for a young man — just turned 21 — to lance the boil of his toxic public image, to show the world that he could take a joke, and maybe tell a few himself. We expected a merciless probing of Bieber’s blunders via zingers that would never fly outside of the context …read more

New media titans have shown they can attract investors’ money, raking in millions in venture capital funding, but they have not answered clearly whether they can show a profit.
At South by Southwest, marketing chiefs for three heavily-funded digital publishers said they can do that too, or can soon, anyway.
Asked whether Refinery29 was profitable, its exec VP-marketing and strategy, Patrick Yee, said yes: “On a scale of not at all to very, I would say ‘quite.'”

The Association of National Advertisers issued a statement today walking back implications from a controversial presentation at its Media Leadership Conference last week regarding widespread agency rebates in the U.S.
“While the ANA cannot specifically identify the breadth and scope of such practices, we regret any impression that agencies in general are engaged in questionable activities and apologize to those who were offended,” the group said in a statement. “It was certainly never the intent of the ANA to make any sweeping statements of widespread agency participation in any questionable practices.”
Bill Duggan, ANA group exec VP, said the talk had spurred further discussions with the 4A’s, the main association of ad agencies. And while he said it wasn’t the ANA’s intention to accuse all agencies, the group also isn’t planning to back down from efforts begun in 2013 to shine more light on the rebate issue in the U.S.

LOS ANGELES — A scorpion stung a woman on the hand just before her flight from Los Angeles to Portland took off.

Publicis’ programmatic arm Vivaki no longer wants to buy ads.
The organization has completed a major reassignment of its ad traders, sending 120 employees out to individual Publicis agencies, and taking them off its own books. Vivaki CEO Stephan Beringer confirmed the moves.
“If you’re a marketer, do you want your programmatic decisions siloed and balkanized from everything else that you’re doing? No. You want it integrated,” said Laura Desmond CEO of Starcom MediaVest Group, which shares stewardship of Vivaki with ZenithOptimedia, all part of Publicis Groupe.

KRAMATORSK, Ukraine — At least seven civilians were killed and more than a dozen wounded in a rocket attack on the Kiev-controlled eastern Ukrainian city of Kramatorsk on Tuesday, regional authorities reported.
The attack happened midday and as residents here returned to offices from lunch. At a café where Mashable was dining, about one mile away from the scene of the attack, the rumbling of a series of violent explosions shook its very foundation, and sent a dozen patrons screaming out the door and under their tables.
As it seeks to build buzz for its next “Do Us A Flavor” contest, Lay’s has struck partnerships with Google, Food Network and SundanceTV. But in addition to those well-known entities, the PepsiCo-owned brand has also tapped an unlikely, and lesser-known, partner: start-up mobile messaging app Yo.
Yo launched last year, primarily allowing users to send their contacts one message: “Yo.” Plenty of media companies have signed on since — including MTV and USA Today — and typically use the service to push out news and content. But Yo has failed to break through in a major way with consumer product brands, and one recent partnership with Motorola did not go so well (see below).
But Lay’s is willing to give Yo a try. “We’re always looking for new and different ways to engage with fans around the ‘Do Us A Flavor’ contest. We’re excited to see how fans respond to our presence on the Yo app,” Tina Mahal, senior director-marketing at Lay’s, said in a statement.
