If you see a drunken dumbass saluting the ghost of Hitler in the streets, kindly smack them in the face.
That’s this weekend’s object lesson from Germany, a nation that knows a thing or two about Nazis. When one such drunken dumbass, an American, started throwing out the stiff-armed Nazi salute in downtown Dresden, he got what he deserved: a swift punch.
The attacker wasn’t caught, but that punch had a lingering, positive impact: the American, a …read more

Social media proved its, uh, incomparable value to the national discourse on Friday when a minor firestorm broke out on Twitter over yet another inflammatory NRA video.
At 5:07 p.m. ET, journalist Yashar Ali tweeted “WATCH: New NRA ad: ‘We’re going to fist the NYT and find out just what deep rich means to this old gray hag.'” He embedded a video that the NRA released via Twitter on Thursday — a video that is actually an excerpt from an NRA “Commentators” video originally released on YouTube and NRATV.com in April.

Maker of Hit Toy Hatchimals Hatches a Plan to Win Christmas
Something is hatching this October. Spin Master, the Toronto-based company behind Hatchimals, the “it” toy of 2016, is preparing for the second iteration of its popular hatching egg toy. But unlike last year, when stores sold out in minutes and desperate parents paid as much as $500, more than eight times the original $60 price, for the privilege of having the must-have item under their Christmas tree, the toymaker will not be caught off-guard.
“It wasn’t that supply wasn’t thereit was an aggressive supply,” explained Tara Tucker, VP of global marketing and communications at 23-year-old Spin Master, which also owns Paw Patrol and Etch A Sketch. “It just caught on so quickly and exceeded anyone’s expectations.” She noted that consumers lined up for Hatchimal product drops as early as 4 a.m. in the months following the brand’s October 7 debut last year. One analyst estimated two million units were sold, generating some $80 million in revenue, according one CNN Money report.
Some retailers are dedicating more space to toys this holiday in an effort to boost sales and encourage in-store visits. JC Penney announced last week it will operate toy shops in all of its 1,000-plus brick-and-mortar stores and has doubled its online assortment as well.

Deflategate 2.0: Big-Spending Viagra and Cialis Are Pulling Out of the NFL
TV networks are trying to keep a stiff upper lip as the once-lucrative erectile dysfunction sector has begun sagging like a doctored football in Tom Brady’s throwing hand. According to multiple insiders, a certain little blue pill has all but vanished from the airwaves, and its absence will be particularly conspicuous during the upcoming NFL season.
Nearly 20 years after the FDA first approved its use as an ED remedy, Pfizer’s Viagra is losing its patent exclusivity, and that’s a bitter pill to swallow for the TV business. Viagra hasn’t aired a national TV advertisement since May 15, and network ad sales executives said the brand is unlikely to resurface, having sat out the 2017-18 upfront bazaar.
Football fans should notice the dearth of Viagra spots as early as Sept. 7, when NBC is set to broadcast its annual NFL Kickoff Game. When the Chiefs and Patriots square off in Foxborough, their clash will not be interrupted by pitches for what was until recently the NFL’s top-spending pharmaceutical brand; according to iSpot.tv data, Viagra last season invested nearly $31 million in pro football inventory.

Feel-Good Hit of the Summer: 12 Seasons in, 'America's Got Talent' Shows No Sign of Letting Up
We’re already one-third of the way through the 18-week summer TV schedule, and while there are still a number of series that have yet to take their bows, it appears unlikely that any will unseat the sweaty season’s longtime ratings champ.
Now in its twelfth season, NBC’s million-dollar competition series “America’s Got Talent” remains summer TV’s gold standard. Through its first five episodes, “AGT” is averaging 12.5 million live-plus-same-day viewers and a dizzying 2.6 rating in NBC’s target demo, which translates to 3.3 million adults 18-49. (Transfer those demo deliveries to the regular season, and “AGT” would rank fourth among all non-NFL broadcast programs, trailing only “The Big Bang Theory,” “Empire” and “This Is Us.”
While “AGT” reaches a somewhat older crowd (the median age of the viewers who tuned in to last Tuesday’s broadcast was 57.4 years), the show’s talent pool of dancing dogs, pre-teen puppeteers and crooning cabbies also helps draw a fair amount of younger enthusiasts as well. In each of the five nights it has aired thus far this summer, “AGT” has put up the highest ratings among the adults 18-34 crowd; currently, the show is drawing around 1.1 million members of the younger demo per broadcast.

The Ethics of Using AI in Advertising
As an industry, advertising has long been obsessed with understanding human behavior. The ability of artificial intelligence (AI) systems to transform vast amounts of complex, ambiguous information into insight is driving personal analysis into market behavior. There are nearly 2 billion Facebook users globally. About 200 billion tweets are shared on Twitter every year. Google processes 40,000+ searches every second. We can now assess the entirety of an individual’s social activity: every word, every picture, every emoji.
Add to that location-based data from mobile phones, transactional data from credit cards and adjacent data sets like news and weather. When machine learning and advanced algorithms are applied to these oceans of digital information, we can intimately understand the motivations of almost every consumer.
These are undeniably powerful tools, and no one can blame the advertising industry for rapidly adopting them.
